A Content Management System (CMS) is software designed to simplify the upkeep of a web site and can be very attractive to someone in business, a charity or church, an individual, or anyone for that matter looking for an easy to manage web site. A CMS can make updating a web site and adding sophisticated functionality like an online store, a newsletter, a reservation system, etc. a breeze.

An example of where a CMS would be invaluable would be a business such as a Bed and Breakfast. Fed up with paying their web designer to continually make changes for them, a CMS would allow them to easily update their own site, add a newsletter component to stay in contact with guests, and even add a reservation system if they choose to. And that list can go on and on.

A few weeks ago I wrote about an outbreak in computer viruses and while the outbreak appears to have slowed down, it would be a very bad idea indeed to let your guard down. In fact, in light recent virus and malware activity, this would be a great time to batten down the hatches.

There are a ton of tools out there that help protect your computer and there are just as many opinions as to which ones are the best. I'm not for a minute going to suggest that the tools I recommend clean all of the junk from your computer, or that they are even all that easy to use. In big business it isn't entirely difficult to create a computer atmosphere that is robust, serves its users well, and is not broken down more often than not. The trick is to hire the right people to build and maintain the network and deal with IT projects as they come up. OK, maybe it's not quite THAT simple but it doesn't need to be a nightmare, provided the right resources are in place.

In the small business world, things often become entirely different. Many small businesses simply don't have the resources to build - let alone maintain - a network that will adequately take care of business needs.  Many small businesses wind up with a mismatch of different parts put together piece by piece by whichever technician was available at any given time and was offering the right price. Nobody's really sure how the pieces fit together and why this was done or that was configured differently. Just finding a password for a router can be a gargantuan challenge in its own right.

If you've ever been in the market for a computer technician or someone to help with a database or jazz up a web site, you may have noted that good ones aren't always easy to find. Not only are there folks out there without the experience necessary to get things done with relative ease, the technology field is littered with different disciplines that more often than not don't overlap. I can't count the times clients have asked "do you do..." or "do you know someone who does..." this or that.

There's no easy formula by which one can punch in a few numbers and know decisively that having Jack from Jack's Crown Computer Service help you or if you'd be better with Jill's Pail of Water PC Care business. With that said, there are a few things that can make the decision easier.

It may not be time yet to tell Internet Explorer and Firefox to step aside. On Tuesday the 2nd of September, the Google Chrome entered onto the web browser scene.

Chrome isn't your typical web browser. Industry pundits have been arguing that it's being positioned not as a replacement for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or any of the other browsers out there but indeed Google is aiming to topple Microsoft Windows itself.
